Critical Theory, Applied Ethics, and Pioneering Gender Studies
Bridging Philosophy and Public Engagement for a Responsible Future
Professor Denko Skalovski is a distinguished Full Professor of Philosophy at the University “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” (UKIM), where he is a core member of the Institute of Philosophy and a founding member of the Institute of Gender Studies . His philosophical work is deeply rooted in Critical Theory, notably through his sustained postdoctoral research at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, under the supervision of Professor Axel Honneth. A leading expert in Applied Ethics, he serves as the Vice President of the Center for Integrative Bioethics, focusing on the ethical imperative of Responsibility in contemporary global and ecological crises.

His Work
Philosophical Praxis and Interdisciplinary Critique
Professor Skalovski’s philosophical output is characterized by a commitment to Critical Praxis, integrating rigorous theoretical foundations with the most urgent global concerns. His methodology is anchored in the tradition of the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory, providing the necessary lens for analyzing issues of social reification and power. This critical framework is applied across three distinct but interwoven domains: The Ethics of Responsibility, where he utilizes Hans Jonas’s ecological imperative to address bioethics and the survival of planetary biodiversity ; Philosophy of Gender and Culture, a field he helped pioneer through the co-founding of the Institute of Gender Studies ; and the study of Aesthetics and Modern Philosophical Anthropology. This interdisciplinary convergence positions Professor Skalovski as a leading European voice in examining post-communist transformation, cultural dynamics, and the ethical challenges facing modern urban society.
